Our Mission & Leadership
Established in 2018 within the HKU Med, the AIMed Laboratory (focusing on digital health and intelligent medicine) is a premier research hub bridging innovation and clinical practice. Led by O&T Department Head Prof. Jason Pui Yin Cheung, Lab Founder Prof. Grace Teng Zhang, and Chief Scientist Dr. Nan Meng, our multidisciplinary team unites surgeons, scientists, and engineers to revolutionize clinical care. We focus on integrating AI into MSK deformity prevention, surgical planning, robotic navigation, and personalized 3D printing, managing a secure clinical big data center to optimise patient care and improve healthcare delivery.
Research Pillars & Infrastructure
Our scientific inquiry is anchored in six core pillars: AI Medical Devices, AI System Security, AI Medical Vision, AI med-service, AI Adaptive 3D Printing, AI Medical Robotics. AIMed combines its own high-performance GPU clusters with the University's massive computational resources. We further leverage the clinical medicine’s expertise and specialized infrastructure—including high-resolution micro-CT imaging, the Biomechanics Laboratory, and advanced motion analysis systems—to rigorously test devices and equipment, ensuring a robust bridge between theoretical research and physical application.
Clinical Impact & Innovation
We are committed to transforming research into tangible medical solutions. Our flagship mskalign® ecosystem with four components covering screening, diagnosis, nonsurgical treatment all the way to surgical interventions. Powered by the AlignPro APP, provides real-time, AI-driven screening and management for scoliosis from hospital to home. Complementing this is Wukong, a radiation-free, 3D light-based analysis system that quantifies body balance without radiation exposures, coupled with AI alignment analysis on standing X-ray examinations, providing comprehensive external and internal spine analysis. Further advancing treatment, the 4DBrace utilizes 3D printing for personalized orthoses, while our MRI-SegFlow framework and markerless navigation systems pioneer new standards in surgical precision. As we expand the frontiers of AIMed, we welcome global partners to join us in delivering secure, effective, and intelligent solutions that reshape the future of medicine.
